Amsterdam will prove an inspiration for even the most experienced shopper. The city has everything, from large shopping malls with multiple stories to specialized boutiques. You’ll also find every style imaginable, from Art Deco to modern Dutch designs.
The Nine Streets
Amsterdam’s historical ring of canals was subdivided into nine small streets in the 17th century. These narrow streets intersect with the main canals near the Leidsestraat and the Jordaan neighborhood. They are home to numerous wonderful restaurants, bars, art galleries, jewelers, boutiques and antique stores. You’ll discover an exceptionally large range of styles, trends and affordable items. This part of Amsterdam is an absolute shopper’s paradise.
The Museum District
The Museum District (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum) also harbors a lot of luxury boutiques and design stores. The P.C. Hooft Street is Amsterdam’s most prestigious and most exclusive shopping street. The relatively short street is home to every design store you’ve ever dreamed of: Chanel, Louis Vuitton, DKNY, Mulberry, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and many more. The Van Baerlestreet is home to a large Vanilia store (a popular Dutch brand). Famous Dutch fashion designers, like Marlies Dekkers, have stores in the Cornelis Schuyt Street.
Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat
The two largest shopping streets in the heart of Amsterdam are the Kalverstraat and the Leidsestraat. You’ll find some exclusive stores like Filippa K, Karen Millen, Paul Warmer and Shoebaloo. In the Kalverstraat you’ll find stores that every big city should have, like H&M, Mexx, Zara and Miss Sixty. There are also various shopping malls around.
Maison de Bonneterie is a shopping mall on the Kalverstraat targeted to the middle class. It sells brands like Armani Jeans, Burberry, Diesel, Dolce & Gabbana, DKNY, Ferragamo, Gant, Hugo Boss, Polo Ralph Lauren, Riani and Marc Cain. Vroom & Dreesman is largest chain of shopping malls. They offer comfortable shopping at affordable prices. Shopping mall the Kalvertoren is home to over 45 different stores that sell well known fashion brands like Mango and Tommy Hilfiger. The Magna Plaza is an exclusive shopping mall located in a magnificent monumental building. It is situated close to the Dam, where you’ll also find the Bijenkorf: a trendy, modern shopping mall with a wide range of fashion and the latest fashion trends.
Spiegel Quarter
After the Rijksmuseum was built in 1900 the Spiegel Quarter became Amsterdam’s hotspot for antiques and curiosa. The stores here offer a wide range of paintings, ceramics, glassware, jewelry, furniture, books and Art Deco.
Haarlemmerdijk
The Haarlemmerdijk is a wonderful shopping street. It is a comfortable, long street with stores stretching down to the Central Station. It is trendy and crowded and you’ll discover anything from shoes, designer fashion and vintage fashion to delicious food, interior design and souvenirs.
Beethoven Street
Fashion, perfumeries, some of the best confectioneries: The Beethoven Street is a fairly wide street and it’s less crowded than some of the other shopping areas. It is the perfect street to shop for luxury products.
