Urban beaches
Blijburg aan Zee
Blijburg aan zee is a sandy beach with a relaxed atmosphere. It is located close to the eastern part of the IJburg Eilanden, ‘Haveneiland Oost’. Aside from the lovely beach of Blijburg there is also a trendy beach pavilion with a bar and an open kitchen. The beach stretches on for 250 meters and is 40 meters wide. There’s always a coast guard present to keep a watchful eye. At night there are often camp fires and every Sunday a DJ or country band performs a show. Blijburg aan Zee is just a trolley car ride away.
BovenNEMO
You can admire the science center NEMO from a building that stands tall above the city. This museum is shaped like a large, green ‘boat’. The building was designed by architect Renzo Piano. The roof of this remarkable building is an attraction in itself, called BovenNEMO. It will give you a spectacular view of Amsterdam’s city center. BovenNEMO is not really a beach, but once you see the palm trees, brightly colored beach chairs, enormous sandbox, waterfall and the Waterwonder, you’ll believe you’re in the south of France or the Spanish Costa! Enjoy a relaxed day with your family and watch the sun set at night. Slouch down in one of the chairs and listen to the coolest DJ records.
Strand West
Amsterdam’s newest beach is called Strand West. It’s a wide sandy plain with a broad view of the river IJ and it is located close to the Central Station. Relax in a hammock or beanbag. Sip a cocktail, enjoy some tappas or participate in a game of beach volleyball with friends or co-workers. Kids can play on the big slide or enjoy the beautiful view from the mini-Ferris wheel.
Supperclub Cruise
For worshippers of the sun who want to suntan in the most trendy of places there is the luxurious Supperclub Cruise. This boat is a paradise for young, trendy tourists and was designed by the famous architecture agency Concrete. Allow yourself to be spoiled with great food and sip a rosé wine while lounging on a chaise longue. Meanwhile, in the lovely, warm sun a DJ will play relaxed summer beats in the background.
